NAS storage calculator
Set how much data you have and how fast it grows. The calculator suggests the usable space, bay count, drive size and RAID level.
This is more than a desktop NAS holds. You need a rackmount unit or an expansion shelf, so it is worth a proper conversation.
Allows 30% extra for versions and snapshots, and about 10% lost to formatting. This sizes the main NAS only. The off-site copy needs its own space.
How the calculation works
Your data today is grown by the yearly rate for the number of years you choose. We then add 30% for file versions and snapshots, because a backup that keeps history needs more room than the live data.
The suggestion is the smallest set of drives that reaches that figure, after setting aside one or two drives for RAID protection and about 10% for formatting.
See RAID levels explained for what one-drive and two-drive protection mean.
